The sibling support group
by Sue Vogler
The sibling support group was first started because the children themselves expressed a need for their own respite/time out.
Often parents are offered respite but the siblings of children with a disability, who are also a support for the family by doing such things as caring for their siblings and helping around the home, don't often know how to express that they also need some time out.
The group was started by a small committee of parents and management from Cooinda Family Support Group. The children expressed their needs and what they would like to have. It was decided to run a junior and a senior group. The groups run after school and a variety of activities are offered such as board games, crafts, cooking and also the occasional excursion around town. These activities are often difficult to do in a busy household.
The children formed great friendships and have also enjoyed meeting other children in similar situations to themselves.
I believe the Sibling Support group is essential in assisting all members of families who have a family member with a disability, especially the siblings.
With the support and guidance of members and management of Cooinda Family Support group, the siblings group will continue to grow into an essential part of supporting all families within the community.
